{"id":642,"date":"2024-08-24T23:54:40","date_gmt":"2024-08-24T21:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pair-o-dice.filk.de\/?page_id=642"},"modified":"2024-09-24T22:24:01","modified_gmt":"2024-09-24T20:24:01","slug":"watchmaker-hill","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pairodice.de\/de\/songs\/watchmaker-hill\/","title":{"rendered":"Watchmaker Hill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So you&#8217;ve traipsed round the sights of our city,<br \/>\nBridge of Vows, the Ostensible Zoo,<br \/>\nand, equipped with a light, seen the Well of the Night,<br \/>\nmaybe hauled up a bucket or two.<br \/>\nBut there are some wonders less vaunted,<br \/>\nlike House Half or the Reverie Mill,<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s a cloister close by where old songs go to die<br \/>\nand just past it &#8211; there&#8217;s Watchmaker Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, ain&#8217;t it a sight in the morning,<br \/>\nwith the steam rising out of each store?<br \/>\nEverywhere you taste time on the air,<br \/>\nand those sounds when you open a door!<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s a whirring and purring and clicking,<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s a jingling and sometimes a scream,<br \/>\nand the watches themselves that reside on the shelves<br \/>\nseem straight from some spring-powered dream.<br \/>\nSome are driven by sand, coal or cider,<br \/>\nsome are potted or baked or crocheted,<br \/>\nSome I knew only ran on a Wednesday or when<br \/>\nunder water, or if they were paid.<\/p>\n<p>Like the one made for Lady MacKenzie,<br \/>\nthat skipped time with a nudge of the hands &#8211;<br \/>\nshe skipped seldom at first, just omitting the worst,<br \/>\nlike keen pain or the passing of friends.<br \/>\nBut she soon went from &#8222;grievous&#8220; to &#8222;irksome&#8220;,<br \/>\nskipping every discomfort or flaw,<br \/>\na nosebleed or splinter, the tax, a cold winter<br \/>\nor tea with her mother-in-law.<br \/>\nHer life dashed by ever more quickly,<br \/>\nmissing many a year at this stage.<br \/>\nShe skipped her last breath but she could not skip death &#8211;<br \/>\nthe youngest to go at her age.<\/p>\n<p>Then those tiny, bright clocks that ran backwards<br \/>\nfor a while were considered tr\u00e9s chic,<br \/>\nfor at times you&#8217;d recall whom you&#8217;d fancy come fall<br \/>\nor the book you had read the next week.<br \/>\nSmitty siphoned the sound of the ticking<br \/>\nto the gaps in between with some skill.<br \/>\nThe result proved quite scaring &#8211; a silence so blaring<br \/>\nit woke half of Watchmaker Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Do you remember Will Fairbanks?<br \/>\nBy an intricate temporal sieve<br \/>\nhis clock could replay any minute or day<br \/>\nthat its owner might wish to relive.<br \/>\nWell, Will aged twenty years in a fortnight,<br \/>\nas he dwelled on old courtships and thrills &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<br \/>\nthey recall his wide smile though it&#8217;s been quite a while<br \/>\nsince they&#8217;ve seen him on Watchmaker Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Then there was the day when Mad Matthews,<br \/>\nto stop time, built the Great Master Clock.<br \/>\nAnd it worked! In this clime on the stroke of the chime. . .<br \/>\n. . .<br \/>\n. . .<br \/>\nWell, it worked not as such for the strain was too much,<br \/>\nthe pendulum rumbled, the gaskets all crumbled<br \/>\nand off went the clock in a frenzied tick-tock,<br \/>\nthe workshop was shredded, Mad Matthews beheaded,<br \/>\nfrom where the clock towered the whole hill was showered<br \/>\nin a deluge of cogwheels and time. . .<br \/>\n(That was one loooong afternoon.)<br \/>\nMatthews&#8216; heirs pay indemnities still.<br \/>\nSuch is life here on Watchmaker Hill.<br \/>\nLadies and gents, come to Watchmaker Hill!<br \/>\nVisit the wonders of Watchmaker Hill!<br \/>\nWatchmaker Hill!<br \/>\nWatchmaker Watchmaker Watchmaker Watchmaker Watchmaker. . .
