\nI huddled up and shivered underneath the looming sky,
\nand I fumbled for prayers and poems
\nin words uncouth and wrong,
\nin that time before Music,
\nin that age before Song.
\nNow my tower\u2019s grown quiet, all its splendor undone.
\nI walk the crumbling spires in the peaceful evening sun.
\nI am drifting through echoing chambers,
\ndown the hallways and years,
\ncalling out now and then
\nto wind, God and men,
\nbut no-one hears
\nin this Tower of Tears. \"\"<\/p>\n

I once was a poet ere the Coming of Strife,
\nback when words had meaning and resounded with truth and life.
\nUnder night skies, I call out new star names
\nbut their sounds don\u2019t belong,
\nand nights are so long
\nin an age before Song.
\nSo I search for the traces of my language of old,
\nbaked in bricks by sunlight, dreaming deeply in rooms untold,
\nand I whisper to arches and stairways,
\nseeking measure and rhyme,
\nbut my plea sounds in vain,
\nfor no mem\u2019ries remain
\nof Babel\u2019s prime
\nin this Tower of Time.<\/p>\n

It came like a torrent, seized me in my sleep.
\nWas it God, was it madness engulfing me wild and deep?
\nSo, entranced, I stepped out on the ledges
\ninto a wind warm and strong,
\nand I opened my heart,
\nfelt the world give a start,
\nand I called out in Song \u2013
\na call made of Song.<\/p>\n

They flocked in from the distance, yearning in their eyes,
\nlistening with a hunger underneath the opened skies,
\nuntil the tune embraced them
\nlike a billowing sail
\nfilled by thousands of voices
\nlike thunder and rain and sea and gale,
\nand when our music resounded through halls of brick and wood
\nthrough dream, mind and soul
\nnow once more made whole,
\nwe understood. . .
\nin this towering Song.
